On April 25, 2024, I celebrated my 10-year anniversary of leading Groove Management full-time. It has been the most rewarding job I have ever held, primarily because it is a company that I conceptualized and brought to life.
I first started reflecting on this journey in my 2018 blog post, A Blast From The Past - Finding My Groove. But hitting the 10-year full-time mark and realizing the original concept was actually turning 25 required a much deeper "Success Autopsy." Using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine, I pulled snapshots of GrooveManagement.com dating all the way back to 2001.
We often relive our lives through our photo timelines on our phones. I use photos to timestamp where I was on certain dates, remember favorite restaurants in foreign cities and to recall memories. Looking at those old screenshots of Groove Management’s website over the years is like flipping through an old high school yearbook. It captures a visual timeline of what it actually takes to find your groove: the false starts, the terrifying leaps, the wipeouts, and the evolution of a brand.
2001: The Reggae Origin Story (And a Lesson in Professionalism)
While 2024 marked my decade at the helm full-time, Groove Management was originally started in 2001 as a graduate school project while I was pursuing my Masters in Organization Development at American University. During the program, we had an assignment to provide pro-bono consulting services. Most of my classmates chose to do this under their own names, but I chose to create a company.
We had learned about Appreciative Inquiry, a strengths-based, positive approach to organizational change that helps people identify advantages and build on successful experiences. My interpretation of appreciative inquiry was to relate it to being "in the groove". When you are in the groove, you are at your best and in a state of flow. This led to the name Groove Management and our tagline, “Helping individuals and organizations to maximize their performance by focusing on their strengths.”
I took that concept, went to GoDaddy, and built my first website. Because I love the contagious rhythm of reggae music, I grabbed a piece of clip-art featuring a dancing Rastafarian character and slapped it right on the bright yellow homepage.
Looking back at it now, I have to laugh. It was an authentic reflection of my musical tastes, but in hindsight, it was not the most professional look for a consultant advising The Motley Fool or pitching Fortune 500 executives. It was my first lesson in navigating corporate adolescence: you have to maintain your authentic spirit while building the executive presence necessary to operate at scale.
April 2014: Letting Go of the Corporate Trapeze
For over a decade, full-time employment working for large organizations kept Groove Management on the back burner. Finally, in 2014, I mustered the courage to jump into the business full-time.
I expected to hang out my shingle and have work just appear, but the first year was slow and filled me with self-doubt. It forced me to strip away the noise and figure out exactly what I was selling. Fortunately, my wife Brita stepped in as my CEO—Chief Encouragement Officer. She was patient and helped me create the discipline to find my product/market fit and go-to-market strategy.
The Evolution of the Brand: Deciphering the Groove Logo
As the business matured, the visual identity needed to mature with it. I wanted a logo that presented exactly what I needed the C-suite to understand about our work, without losing the personal passion that started it all. If you look closely at the current Groove Management logo, it operates on three distinct levels:
The Eye (Vision): At first glance, the logo is an eye. The eye is the universal symbol for vision. At Groove Management, our foundational work involves helping organizations and leaders cut through the noise to set and articulate a clear, compelling vision.
The Gear (Process): Inside the eyeball sits a mechanical gear. Vision without execution is just a hallucination. The gear represents our commitment to driving the operational processes that actually improve execution and sustain growth.
The Hidden Sailboat (Passion): If you trace the outer outline of the eye, it forms the shape of a sleek sailboat. I was a competitive college sailor, and I frequently use sailing and surfing metaphors when coaching executives. A core pillar of our coaching process is helping individuals bring their authentic passions into their daily work. Hiding a sailboat in the corporate logo was my deliberate way of practicing what I preach—injecting my personal joy into the company’s identity.
The Unchanging Core
Today, Groove Management has grown far beyond just me. The company is made up of a diverse group of highly talented, caring leaders who strive to make our clients better every day. We have had the opportunity to work with iconic brands and world-class leaders.
Looking back across 25 years of websites, the biggest lesson is that a groove isn't static. Your groove evolves as your life stages and business circumstances shift, and you only find it by leaning into the friction. That realization is the heartbeat of my upcoming book, Finding Your Groove. It is a compass to help you drop the expert mask, own your Kryptonite, and turn your wipeouts into your greatest competitive advantage.
Take ten minutes this week to look back at your own "Wayback Machine." Don't just look at what you've fixed, dissect what you've done right, celebrate how far you've come, and keep paddling out.
Groove On!
