What Drives You To Succeed?

Success can take on many different forms. More importantly, how one achieves success can be through a variety of different paths. Understanding personal style and motivation can help each of us to better leverage our strengths. There are a number of leadership assessment tools that can be utilized to develop better self-awareness. One in particular that I have found incredibly insightful is the Leading Dimensions Profile (LDP) .

The Leading Dimensions Profile (LDP) is a 95-item survey, based on a multi-dimensional framework that measures two primary motivational factors and ten supporting behavioral characteristics (referred to as dimensions). The primary factors, Achievement Drive and Relational Drive, are presented on the widely-used 2x2 grid format, describing an individual based on one of four unique personality styles:

• Consultative Counselor

• Adaptive Coach

• Directive Driver

• Contemplative Advisor

The notion of Achievement Driveversus Relationship Drive creates an interesting dynamic as one progresses through their career. Much like situational leadership, the leadership style an individual employs must shift based on their role and the size of the team that they are leading. Early in ones career achievement is usually driven by individual execution. As one moves from a doer to a manager and a leader, work must be accomplished through others. Relationship drive becomes more critical in leadership roles. Achievement is accomplished through others and this is a big shift that many have trouble making.
